Void Pen Item in Paldurog | World Anvil

Void Pen

The Void Pen is used to sign contracts. Often used by powerful families, like royals, and the underworld.

The Void Pen almost works like a normal pen, except that instead of ink, it draws blood from the user. The user does not notice any discomfort.

When signing a contract, it curses both signees. If a signee breaks the contract, their life is void, sending their body to an interdimensional sphere while their soul is trapped in a shard next to the body. If the body and shard are found, only the other signee can restore the soul by performing the Rite of Kalto.

Upon fulfilling the contract, both signees hear a gong after which the contract disappears as if it never existed.

Fine print

If the contract contains fine print not visible to the reader, those terms do not apply to the Void Pen.

The void pen is a black pen which emanates a black and red aura.

Only a powerful warlock can summon A Void Pen. Their patron can create the pen for them, although the patron usually wants a favor in return.

While it is not always the case, the patron can unsummon the Void Pen when the warlock dies. A notable example of a Void Pen remaining in the realm of the living is the Void Pen of Sektor.

Notable examples

Another notable example of a Void Pen is the Void Pen of The Warden in the Out Of Time Museum. This Void Pen was created by Frederick Wright, who gifted it to The Warden before his death. Since the museum exists in all times, the creator is both living and dead at the same time, a loophole the patron allows.
While The Warden often creates contracts, The Warden rarely signs them themself, instead one of The Volunteers sign it.

Oof, what a scary item. I wonder what would make people willing to use something that has such a risk!

With great risks come great payouts. I'd imagine assassins being willing to sign the contract and if the monetary reward is great enough.

That's a neat idea! Usually, it is the contract that is the harbringer of consequences, not the pen. Coool stuff :D

Wow that is one scary pen. Would not want to sign a contract with that :p Does it also hurt the one using it as it draws blood?

Interesting concept. How does it work after contract has been fulfiled and both parties did what they were expected to do? Will they be freed from the binding of the curse?

Interesting question... The curse will be lifted, but what happens to the contract is something I'll have to describe at some point.
