Overview & Creation
An Onikiri gets their power from the liquid jade that they ingested during their final rite. If they survived, the jade running in their veins grants them powers that help them keep up with Oni and fight off the Taint.
Ingesting liquid jade and having Jade injected into their bodies changes them physically. This is seen best in the Onikiri's eye color change. Depending on the color of the Onikiri's spirit, their eye color changes to reflect it. Moreover, the Onikiri's irises changes into a mineral-like appearance, similar to how jade looks. The jade also boosts the body's immune system, making the Onikiri immune to becoming Tainted. Lastly, an Onikiri's physical prowess increases, allowing them to move faster, hit harder, and fight for longer when the latent jade in their bodies become active. The longer the jade remains active, the signs become more visible. This manifests in the Onikiri's eyes and the veins around the eyes to glow their jades color.
However, an Onikiri's jade stores need to be replenished every so often. If they aren't routinely restored, the powers given to them by the jade wanes and eventually diminished. Moreover, after a certain period of an Onikiri's body jade levels being at 0, their bodies rapidly deteriorates, with death coming soon after. Cutting off an Onikiri's jade supply, is like cutting off a living creatures supply of water.
Class Features
Jadeite
Surviving your final rites means that your body has accepted the presence of Jade. The Jade that you ingested and that was injected into your blood stream now lies dormant in your veins. The jade now in your body is referred to as Jadeite, and it awakens in the presence of Taint.
Jadeite Levels
When the Jadeite awakens, it will deplete your jade stores, only stopping when the Taint source vanishes. Some of your Onikiri abilities will decrease your Jadeite Levels for as long as your Jadeite is awakened. How long it takes varies per Onikiri, as some Onikiri's have better adapted to the Jadeite in their bodies. Moreover, your Jade Stores increase as you level up, much like HP.
You will notice that as your Jadeite Levels reach certain thresholds, the efficacy of some of your Onikiri abilities also diminishes. Once your Jadeite Levels reach 0, you won't be able to use any and all of your Onikiri Abilities, and your body will start to deteriorate. For each day that your stores are ate 0, you gain one level of exhaustion. Any and all exhaustion levels gained in this way can only be removed after your Jadeite Levels reach at least a quarter of your maximum Jadeite Levels.
Your Jadeite Level are equal to your level times 5. An Onikiri can restore Jadeite Levels by using a Jade Philter.
Jade Philter
A Jade Philter is an alchemical concoction that Onikiri use to restore their Jadeite levels. However, a Jade Philter is toxic to anyone that isn't an Onikiri. After becoming an Onikiri, they are given a Jade Philter kit that is specifically used for making a Jade Philter. The Jade Philter Kit a small mortar and pestle, a jade grinder, a small ceramic sake bottle with two ceramic sake cups, a glass beaker and a metal frame to hold it over a flame, a bamboo stirring stick, a silk cloth to clean your implements, and a compartment that can hole up to 10 fingers of jade, the kit itself is a square wooden rectangular box just a bit bigger than two hands.
Crafting a Jade Philter
Crafting a Jade Philter can be completed over a short rest or about one hour. The procedure is as follows:
Take a finger of jade and place in the jade grinder and add boiling water into the grinder.
Grind the jade until the finger has broken down into small chunks or pebbles of jade.
Place the grinded jade into the mortar and pestle and pour in more boiling water. Crush into a fine powder, add hot water whenever necessary.
Pour the jade powder into the beaker and add two cups of sake. Place the beaker on an open flame and stirring in another cup of sake every few minutes until you finish the sake from the ceramic bottle that comes with the kit.
Once the mixture has a thick syrupy consistency, remove from the flame and let sit until it cools.
Once it cools, pour into the ceramic bottle and drink.
The concentration of the Jade Philter is determined by the purity of the jade used. The higher the concentration the more Jadeite Points are restored by the Jade Philter.

Jade Color
When you first ingest Jade, the Spirit of Jade speaks to you and determines the color of your spirit. The Spirit of Jade tries to understand how you think, how you act, what drives you, your ideals, and your fears. After it has a clear grasp of your personality, it reveals what the color of your spirit and subsequently which color of jade best matches you. This determines what effects the jade you ingested will have on you, and what abilities you'll get from it.
There are 5 colors of Jade; White, Blue, Black, Red, and Green. Your Jade color gives you an abilities at 5th, 10th, and 15th level.
Muramasa Buki
After your final rites, you will be given a Muramasa Buki, or Muramasa Weapon. These weapons are named after the famed black smith
Sengo Muramasa. These weapons are especially forged by a blacksmith who has learned the secrets of the Muramasa blacksmith school. The Muramasa Buki are specifically made for harming Oni, and for use of Onikiri only due to the use of Oni Ichor instead of water in quenching the steel.
This makes the weapon essentially Tainted, as the weapon harbors the essence of Oni. However, due to the special smithing techniques involved, the essence of the Oni is latent much like the Jadeite in Onikiri, and requires a chant, prayer, or incantation by the weapons owner for its true power to activate.
Once you receive your Muramasa Buki, you must spend time in deep meditation which binds the Muramasa Buki to you. You meditate for 1 hour, which can be done during a short rest. The Muramasa Buki must be withing your reach throughout your meditation, at the conclusion of which you callout to the weapons spirit and the bond is forged, as you learn the identity of the Oni that resides in the Muramasa Buki.
Once you have bonded the Muramasa Buki to yourself, you can't be disarmed of that weapon unless you are incapacitated. You also know its exact location at all times. It only responds to your call, and can only be activated by you. Other Onikiri may hold your Muramasa Buki, but cannot summon its power, anyone else cannot touch the weapon or they will become possessed by the soul of the weapon, become tainted, or worse become an Oni themselves. This is because regular people lack the Jadeite, which is what protects an Onikiri from corruption.
Calling out to your Muramasa Buki awakens its latent power. At first the Muramasa Buki looks like a regular weapon with dark steel, but when awakened, certain parts of the weapon illuminates. For example, the weapons blade edge might glow a certain color, or engravings on the weapon not previously seen might suddenly appear. How your weapon looks when activated is up to you.
Awakening your Muramasa Buki. As a bonus action, you can expend 2 Jadeite Points, and awaken your Muramasa Buki. You can release it as a free action at any time. When awakened, To hold your Muramasa Buki when you have no Jadeite Points left, you must wrap your hand in jade prayer beads, or with the sacred cloth given to you when you received the Muramasa Buki.
Supernatural Sense
Jadeite allows you to sense Yokai when you can't see them, giving you an extrasensory perception or a sixth sense when taint or magic is nearby. When you become an Onikiri, you automatically know when there is taint or magic nearby when you are within 60 feet of it.
As long as you are within 60 feet of the Taint or the source of magic, your Jadeite is considered awakened. So long as you're conscious, a tainted creature gains no benefit from surprise against you.

Jade Color
After ingesting liquid jade, the Spirit of Jade speaks to them from a realm unknown. It asks the initiate questions in order to glean what color its soul is. After the Spirit of Jade fully comprehends the initiates being, it reveals to the initiate what the color of their soul is. This in turn grants the initiates a myriad of abilities based on their jade color.
White Jade
Onikiri's whose souls are considered white are goodness and justice personified. These individuals are selfless and strive to make the world a better place. They hold themselves and others to their lofty ideals of truth, justice, honor, and order. They also believe that to make the world a better place is coordination and cooperation and rules and restraint, and that everyone needs to work together to achieve that ideal.
White Onikiri tend to hold ranking positions in the Monban army, due to their adherence to rules and discipline, as well as their ability to bolster the troops in their charge. Often, common folk think white Onikiri are samurai or were samurai due to their stern and rigidity. Abilities given to them by Jadeite reflect this, protecting and bolstering themselves and their allies.
Aura of Rejuvenation
Your Jadeite emits a powerful cleansing aura that helps you and your allies fight back against the Taint. When your Jadeite is active, as an action, you may expend 2 Jadeite Points and utter a prayer. A rejuvenating aura springs forth from you. Any friendly creature within 10 feet of you subject to making a saving throw to resist the effects of taint does so with advantage. Additionally, at the end of your turn, every friendly creature within 20 feet of you regains 2d4 + your constitution modifier (minimum 1) hit points. You and the creature must be conscious to gain this benefit.
Jadeite Points required: 1 point per round after activating.
Half Efficacy: 10ft
Blue Jade
Onikiri's who have blue colored souls are driven by the pursuit of knowledge. Blue Onikiri's tend to be scholars or mages, and often join because they wanted to learn the secrets of the Onikiri, study Oni and Yokai at a more involved level, or both. Blue Onikiri's also tend to be very methodical and deliberate, wanting to fully understand something before deciding the best course of action--they think before they act.
A lot of what Onikiri know about Oni, Yokai, and Kuramoto came from what blue Onikiri have researched or studied in the past. The tactics and methods created to specifically combat Oni and Yokai were all developed by blue Onikiri who took the time to understand the enemy. Blue Onikiri don't usually end up in positions in the Monban army, as they would prefer to study and research their enemies, but when they do they usally end up as tacticians.
Blue Onikiri's abilities are focuses on gaining knowledge over their foes, and using that knowledge to their advantage.
Eyes of Clarity
Jadeite has altered your perception, allowing you to see things that normal folk and even other Onikiri can't normally see. When your Jadeite is active, as an action, you may expend 2 Jadeite Points and your eyes glow a brilliant azure. For as long as you keep it active, you gain the following benefits:
You gain darkvision and truesight to 60ft. You can sense magic as with the detect magic spell. You learn any and all immunities, resistances, and vulnerabilities a Yokai or Tainted creature has.You gain a bonus to your attack rolls equal to your proficiency modifier. When you fall below half your Jadeite points, you lose darkvision, truesight, and the bonus to attack rolls.
Jadeite Points Required: 1 point per round after activating.
Black Jade
Onikiri's whose souls are black tend to be ambitious individuals. Becoming an Onikiri for them was a means to an end, and most black Onikiri become one because they want to kill Oni because one had caused them pain in the past, usually by killing a loved one. Most black Onikiri also tend to be criminals who have accepted the punishment of life at Otorii, and their scrupulous natures are reflected in their Jadeite.
Black Onikiri don't just want to kill Onikiri, they want to crush them. They want the Onis and Yokai they face to be utterly helpless to them. Black Onikiri also tend to hold positions in the Monban amry, like White Onikiri, but they are placed in such positions due to their willingness to do anything to combat Kuramoto.Black Onikiri will do anything in their power to annihilate the Oni threat, even blood magic.
Bloody Strike
You trade your own lifeforce to empower your strikes against your foes. When your Jadeite is active, As a bonus action, you may expend 2 Jadeite Points and have your Muramasa Buki drain your life force. Whenever you hit a Yokai or Tainted creature, you may declare that you are using bloody strike, and add an extra 2d6 to your damage roll. You take damage equal to half the damage dealt, and this damage can't be reduced in anyway. You gain temporary hit points equal to the damage you received from this, and don't go away until your Jadeite is no longer active.
Jadeite Points Required: 1 point per round after activating.
Half Efficacy: You take full damage dealt by the dice, but still only gain half as temporary hit points.
Red Jade
Onikiri's who are deemed as red souls are driven by their whims. Red Onikiri's love their freedom, and are guided what they want to do. Similar to Black Onikiri, but are not as driven, rather they follow their hearts desire. Red Onikiri's are bold and decisive, they prefer the direct method--acting before thinking if at all. Much like Black Onikiri, some Red Onikiri's become one because they wanted to, but it ends there, they simply felt like becoming one.
Red Onikiri don't typically hold positions in the Monban army, they would much rather prefer roaming the lands of Hinomoto embracing wanting to keep their autonomy and independence, and not have to worry about the duldrums of rank and file.
The abilities of a Red Onikiri revolve around direct strategies, relying on speed and ferocity, to defeat Oni.
Relentless Assault
Your Jadeite allows you to move faster and hit harder. When your Jadeite is active, as an action, you may expend 2 Jadeite Points, intensifying the Jadeite already flowing in your veins. For as long as you keep it active, you gain the following benefits:
Your movement speed is increased by 10ft.
You may Dash as a bonus action.
Weapon attacks and spell attacks deal an extra 1d4 of that weapon or spells damage.
At Half Efficacy, you lose your bonus to movement speed and the ability to dash as a bonus action.
Jadeite Points Required: 1 point per round after activating.
Green Jade
Green Onikiri's are perhaps the most rare of all Onikiri's. As green is the natural color of Jade, an Onikiri's soul must be untouched by any desire, ideal, emotion, or whim. It must not seek what it does not have, nor yearn for them. It must not want to change, but rather simply accept things for what they are. Green Onikiri's believe that most of the suffering and misfortune in the world comes from attempts to cast off one’s natural mantle, step outside of one’s natural role, or fix things which aren’t broken.
Due to their rarity, there haven't been any Green Onikiri holding positions of rank in the Monban army. Their abilities tend to focus on strengthening ones physicality, making them nigh impossible to kill.
Undying
Your Jadeite pushes your physical limits, pushing your strength to that of an Oni's. When your Jadeite is active, as an action you may expend 2 Jadeite Points and become incredibly tough. For as long as you keep it active, you gain resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing attacks.
Jadeite Points Required: 1 per round after activating.
Half Efficacy: You become resistant to nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage instead.
