Parking on the sidewalk, we went out of our new vehicle like two vagabonds; moving up the steps to the entrance of the police station before entering. As we both head inside, the main waiting lobby is filled with visitors and employers once again. The receptionists was busy taking calls and dealing with the people coming in and out.

It appeared to be that the place has returned to normalcy again, though, the atmosphere was somewhat different from before.

Eve at my side commented on the new change of air, ” everything is back to the way it was,” she added with a slight smile on the edge of her lips.

Yeah, it’s nice to be back, especially that I have finally avenged the deaths of everyone in the asylum I previous used to worked in. Although, I am still unable to put this odd feeling at the side of my head that something eventual and dangerous is going to happen soon.

Probably just my imagination. And even if that was the case, I still have my allies—my friends and family who I can depend upon when I need the most.

“Let’s check on the Chief, perhaps he has something for us,” suggesting to Eve.

We made a quick walk to the Chief office, moving through the same hallway we had been through numerous times before stopping in front of his door.

Opening the said door; which I would want to remind ourselves that he sometimes locks or unlocks his door, depending on how much privacy he needs to be left alone. We walked in, only to find Chief Walker playing some video games on his gaming desktop.

“Boss!” I shouted but to no avail, he is currently so engrossed with his game. Probably trying to beat a high score, or possibly attempting to complete a level. That was probably the only reason as to why he is not paying attention to anyone else. A small chuckle escaped from the corner of my mouth from the thought.

Damn, is he some teenager or something? His a grown ass man playing video games on his set up gaming desktop and computer with the addition of cool-looking headsets.

I wonder if he is doing this to escape from all the work that is piling up at his desk.

Shouting again, “BOSS!” I screamed at the top of my lungs; however, the sound of the game drowned me out. No response or acknowledgement of my voice. So, instead of yelling anymore, I decided to use a more gentle approach to get his attention.

Leaning on the table that separated his room from his space, and tapping the shoulder of his back; a simple gesture to grab his attention.

Chief Walker immediately reacted and turn his gaming around in surprise when he saw me as he takes of his gaming headphone, “sorry, son. I was busy playing a game.” He apologizes with a straight face, though there is a hint of guilt in his eyes as well.

Eh, it’s no problem.Shrugging, “you do you, boss. Anyway, let’s get straight to business, alright?” I ask before walking back to sit down in the chair opposite of his, followed by Eve as she took her seat beside mine.

The Chief first drank a bottle of water to clear his throat. Then, he cleared it once more. After that, the boss finally started talking. Not like it was a big deal or anything; but it felt more than awkward for him to be speaking to us in an unusual situation like this.

“So,” Walker began, clearing his throat for a second time, “there is something that might pick your interest,” the chief says while taking another sip from his water.

“What interest?” I asked, curiously.

He got up out of his seat and went to a nearby table that is stacked in numerous amounts of documents and papers. As he rummaged around for a few minutes, before sitting back in his chair and pulling a document to hand it to me.

“This is regarding a little girl…who was responsible for the mass murders across the city,” Walker’s serious tone made me raise an eyebrow, as he continued to speak, “and apparently, she also eats them as well. A cannibalistic murderer—if that isn’t enough to put a chill down your spine. Now, this is a copy of the report that was sent to the higher authorities. There is a chance that they will not take action if it doesn’t involve numerous people dying,” the presentation put a sour taste to my mouth.

Opening the documents and reading the details, I was no more than disturbed of what I am looking at with my two eyes. Mutilated pictures of men, women and children in all sizes are brutally torn to shreds. It looked like they were sent into grinder or being exploded by some bomb; however, it is evident that these are real corpses, and not fake ones.

However, there is one small detail I noticed from taking a look at these pictures. These corpses take place outside in the open and based on the time they died-it appears that our killer does not care if it is day or night; they are left outside in the freezing cold to be found by anyone.

Most of all, the bodies were freshly killed and not too old to be rotting away. That means the killer is killing new victims every single day or week.

Taking everything into account, I asked a question in hopes of getting closer to solving this new case I am handed with, “they are only pictures, no papers so far. Why is that?”

Walker was silent as he thought about the answer. He then answered with a sigh, “to tell you the truth, no one is capable of capturing her-let alone is able to,” the sound of his voice made me think that they had already found this kid but were unable to apprehend her successfully or even kill her.

That made me thinking…

“So you guys know where she is, but are unable to capture or kill her because of lack of resources, cowardly officers and likely laziness. Am I correct in this assumption?” My answer were correct when he replied with a nod and said; “that is pretty much the gist of things.”I did not like this feeling that something is wrong here, but there are no clues to follow—or even lead us to find this child. It appears like she just pops out of nowhere at random places and times.

Walker remove a cigar of his own, lighting it up with an elegant lighter before puffing on the smoke, “the problem of defeating this kid is that she this mass killer isn’t even human to begin with,” his words were like a punch to the gut.

Not human? That made my heartbeat; but why is that so shocking to hear from Walker? Some people in recent times calls the worst criminals monsters, but that is just a term by society to describe the evilness and wickedness of a criminal.

Regardless, they are still human beings with families and friends, but there is no denying that the girl we are hunting is not normal. Because of the way she killed her victims…it appears like an explosion went off.

“Adam?” Eve’s sudden call of my name brought me out of my meditative focus, “you are suddenly sweating,” her soothing and worried voice made me feel at ease.

Nervous? Anxious? Dread? These three are what I am feeling right now. No wonder the feeling of oncoming danger at the back of my head when I entered this building was correct. If this is the case, then I guess, I need to place my health in priority first.

Standing up, “can I have day off today and tomorrow? I just don’t feel right with me after finishing up in the previous case,” asking for leave from work with a tone that was both apologetic and concerned that was the only option that could be done.

My boss looked surprised and confused as if the request was a joke. Then, he shrugged and asked; “sure, but are you sure about that? If you post-pone this case, then there will be more deaths and casualties. Do you want that to happen?”

With a grim face and a serious look in the eyes, I nodded. “I am fine with that, but please allow me to be absent as long as it is needed to complete the task. Please, Chief? I’m just not feeling like myself today,” looking away from him and trying to ignore the fact that he was glaring at me, disappointed.

After a few minutes of silence, the chief gave a small nod. “Okay. You can use your sick days if it will make you better,” the Chief said as he walked towards the door; opening it wide for us, “you two can go.” Saying his words, we complied and head out his office before it was shut close.

Sighing tiredly, “sorry about that Eve, I just don’t feel like myself today,” sincerely telling her how much it bothers me to be in this state.

Eve smiled gently and replied with a comforting voice. “It’s okay Adam, if taking a break makes you feel any better then it is a good thing. Don’t worry about it too much, there are things that are beyond our control. Just try to relax and imagine something else—like the weather, or anything that doesn’t involve death or blood.”

That is good advice. However, it is hard to do that with a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach; knowing that more innocent people will die because I decided to take a break from work simply. Jesus, I’m selfish son of bitch.

“Yeah,” I returned the smile, “why don’t we…uh,” a blush resurfaced on my cheeks, turning to look at the side in embarrassment, “have a date?” I finished lamely.

Noticing the sudden change in the atmosphere between us, she quickly responded with more emotion than before. “Oh! A-a date?!” She stuttered. “I mean—that sounds wonderful!”

A slight chuckle escaped my lips. “Yeah, why not. It is not everyday I hang out with a gorgeous woman like yourself,” complimenting her with a gentle and warm tone of voice; which caused the blush on her cheeks to grow further.

“That…would be nice if that is okay with you,” Eve nervously answered. “Though, I do not know where to start. Are we going to a restaurant, fancy hotel or maybe a movie theater?” Her tone was now less nervous but more excited.

I chuckled again, “how about an amusement park?”

Her face immediately turned bright red as if the sun was shining directly on it. “Wh-what do you mean by that?! Why are you trying to embarrass me?!” She asked with a high pitch. Then, suddenly, she was struck with the realization of the question, covering her mouth with both hands and laughing quietly. After regaining composure, she continued to speak, but in a more composed manner.

“You were implying a theme park?” Eve answered with a soft and shy laugh.

Yep and what was she thinking when I said it? I am curious to know but I’ll ask her later, “bingo. So are you interested in this date?” I inquired as if it were a game of cards.

“Of course, Adam. What girl would not be interested in that; especially with a handsome guy like you asking to spend time together on such a romantic day,” she replied with a coy grin.

Smiling at my thoughts, I feel all my problems washed away when she became more active than her composed and cold self. It is nice to see these moments of hers, makes me feel brighter and happier than before.

“Alright, let’s get this started then, ” we walked in this hallway to the main waiting lobby, passing each bystander in our way before eventually reach the exit and head towards the car. There is one thing I want to say about this date of ours; it was amazing, in fact, the best moment in my entire life.

Not only was it the best, but this may have been the last great memory I ever had in this world. Not only will I date the person I truly love in the whole damn world, I am also planning something else if all goes well.
