The chains represent the link between the enlightened species, magic and the earth. If broken, the chain cannot be mended.

According to the The prophecy of Fychan, if the chain between the enlightened and magic is lost, the end of times will happen. It is a time where the enlightened cannot produce or even use magic.

While there have been no prophecies around this, it is believed that if this chain is broken, the earth will stop being fertile. Plantlife and animals will die off causing mankind to die off as well.
