The Fox, the Miller and his Wife

Once upon a time, there lived a miller with his wife at the edge of the forest. They had a little land and a yard full of chicken.

On an unfortunate night, one of the chickens were lost to a fox whilst the miller was asleep. His wife told him to guard the chickens the next night, so the fox would not dare to steal one again.

So the miller set up a chair in the yard, sat upon it and began his watch. As the stars came up, the miller lost his focus and fell asleep. When he woke up, he saw that another chicken was lost that night. When his wife found out, she was furious and demanded that the miller stay up for the next night. If another chicken is lost before dawn, the miller would not eat lunch that day.

So the miller went back to the yard as he thought of a better solution. He made a fence around their yard to protect the chickens from the fox.  At night, he sat in the chair again and fell asleep quickly. When he woke up, he saw that no chicken was lost that night. He told his wife that he stayed up and deterred the fox. The wife saw the fence and asked the miller if it is impenetrable. The miller told her that the fence is not impenetrable, but it should keep a fox out. His wife did not find the fence suitable and asked the miller to stand guard again to make sure the fox can't get through.

Reluctantly, the miller sat out into the yard once again. He fell asleep as quickly as he did before. When he woke up, he saw that no chicken was lost that night. When he went inside to tell his wife, he found that she was killed by robbers that night.
