Withering Tendrils.
Despite being part of the same entity, it is important to distinguish that the tendrils and core of a Corpse Field are functionally seperate entities that work together; and as such damaging a tendril does not deal significant damage to the main body itself.

  • Each Tendril uses the Zombie statblock (see basic rules pg. 161), with some noteable differences. Tendrils have a movement speed of 30ft.; 30hp; 15 STR, 8 DEX and 20 CON. Additionally, Tendrils have additional damage resistances, immunities and vulnerbilities as described above; as well as upgraded actions as described below.

  • Whenever a Tendril is killed, it is rapidly withdrawn back into the Core. Any creature within 5ft. of the Tendril when it is slain can make a DC 15 Perception check to locate the Tendril as it is withdrawn. On a success, they see the Tendril being withdrawn, and can locate the location of the Core with a successful Investigation or Survival check of DC 13; DC 16 if the Core is concealed within the terrain.

  • A standard Corpse Field with a radius of 30ft. will on average have 16 Tendrils (but can range from 10-30 Tendrils). When a Tendril is killed, 5 damage is dealt to the Core. When the Core has been killed, all Tendrils immediately drop to 0hp.

Undead Fortitude.
If damage reduces a Tendril to 0 hit points, it must make a Constitution saving throw with a DC of 5+the damage taken, unless the damage is radiant or slashing. On a success, the Tendril drops to 1 hit point instead.

Actions

Multiattack A.
The Corpse Field can make a number of Slam or Grapple attacks equal to the number of Tendrils within 5ft. of a living creature.

Multiattack B. The Corpse Field can use its Reel action, and its Chitin Spear attack.

Slam (Tendril).
Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d10 + 3) bludgeoning damage.

Grapple (Tendril). Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d4+3) bludgeoning damage, and the target is grappled (Escape DC 13). Creatures grappled in this way are restrained until the grapple is broken.

Chitin Spear (Core). Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (3d10 + 6) piercing damage. A creature hit by this attack is grappled in such a way that they cannot increase or decrease their distance from the core, but can more freely around the radius. While a creature is grappled in this way, the Corpse Field cannot use its Chitin Spear attack. At the start of the grappled creatures turn, it suffers 13 (2d8 + 5) acid damage, and can attempt to break the grapple with an escape DC 15, or self inflict 10 slashing damage to forcefully rip out the barbed spear, ending the grapple.

Reel (Tendril). The Corpse Field pulls one grappled target of its choosing 30ft. straight towards it.

Regional Effects

Areas where Corpse Fields lay down roots are unnaturally fertile and the ecologically diverse. This is because a Corpse Field will divert some of the nutrients from its victims to the surrounding plant life, encouraging and fostering the growth of the foliage that hides it, while simultaneously killing the grazing animals that would disrupt its cover.

Usual Tactics

The Corpse Field is an ambush predator, and as such utilizes tactics that involves waiting until its victim is well within its striking range before making an attack. Once the ambush is started, the Corpse Field will attempt to surround, subdue and pin its prey with its Tendrils; after which it will withdraw the Tendril attached to the creature nearest to its Core. When a creature is withdrawn in this way, the Core will use its Chitin Spear to pin its prey and attempt to kill and consume it.

"Dear god, what happened here?" The murmur from the point ripples over the brigade, an echo of the thoughts ringing through me; and judging from everyones expression, theirs too. The field is littered with corpses, a holes punched through theirs heads, torsos and legs; limbs drained and mummified, weeping a snap as my boot presses into an arm. As I looked up, something deep in my stomach turned and sank like a stone, dragging my lungs into my stomach. My head reached barely over the high grass, but peering out over the field, I could see grass indentations in every direction.

We pushed deeper, intent on finding whatever did this to these poor lost souls; when we suddenly stop, as the point man begins to investigate one of the bodies. I push to the front, and notice a troubled look upon Gilith's face. "Is something wrong?" Gilith grumbled and paused for a moment, "There's something about these bodies sir, something just... wrong. Can you get the medic up here to take a look at this?" Frie came up and looked over the body, "Sir, I have a bad feeling about this. I've seen the result of many an unlucky soul before, bodies mummified by a Bloodsucker Swarm, the warmth stolen from the hearts of the Maggot Men, but never something like this." I looked over the body, true it was unusual to see a torso with a hole punched through them, but that in itself didn't seem concerning. "What specifically is unusual here Frie?" "It's the holes, sir; there's skin connected all the way through."

No sooner had the words left her mouth then they were upon us. The bodies coming alive and lurching towards us from all directions. I turn to deflect a groping hand; the head of the zombie removed in a single swift motion. I turn back again, "FRIE, WE NEED-" I'm cut short, and Frie is nowhere to be seen, as grab marks and finger nails lay in the dirt, leading deeper into the underbrush. Gilith isn't doing much better, pinned to the ground by a trio of zombies, and I see the same fate becoming each of the others. I fled. It was the cowardly thing to do, and I know that Lathandar will never forgive me for allowing the flames of those brave men and women to be snuffed in such a manner; but in the moment I fled nonetheless.

----------------------------------

The Corpse Field is exactly as it sounds, a field of corpses. The Corpse Field is like a pitcher plant and venus fly trap, a conglomeration of zombies corrupted by the shadowfell, into a single being rooted deep in the earth. In terms of anatomy, you can imagine a Corpse Field in 2 parts, the Core, and the Tendrils. The Core is the center of the Corpse Field, being the main body, and the Tendrils stretch out randomly in a circular area with a radius between 15 and 50ft. wide, depending on the age of the Corpse Field. Whenever a humanoid is killed by the Corpse Field, they are dragged by the Tendril back to the Core, where they are eaten. After their food has been digested, instead of expelling the exriment like any living creature, instead they use the skeleton of the creature as a frame, growing flesh and skin around the corpse, transforming it into a new Tendril.

Corpse Fields are ambush predators, however there are many variations. The most common variation of a Corpse Field is as described in the short story, a literal field of bodies in an area, full of puncture marks left over time feeding. While not smart, Corpse Fields are inspired in their intuition, and this variation of Corpse Fields often hide the tendrils that connect the bait to the main body in the terrain; deep in a field of high grass, submered in the mud of a wetland, under snow or sand, whatever can hide them from above.
A less common variant of the Corpse Field that was once known as the monster, the Lynching Tree, is known as an Everblack Corpse Field. These Corpse Fields are usually created as the result of a mass lynching, where the corpses of the damned spontaneously and simultaneously regain life through the Shadowfells influence. These Corpse Fields look like the result of a mass lynching, tendrils hanging down from the branches of the trees, and the core hidden away in the hollow of a tree. When encroached upon, the Tendrils of the Everblack fall from the branches as one like humanoid spiders, hoarding their victims towards the tree's trunk, through which it spears them from behind.
Another varient of the Corpse Field are known as the Dungeon Corpse Field. These Corpse Fields take home in caves and dungeon entrances, having bodies line the walls and the cave entrance, baiting the curious deep into its depths before blocking the way out.
