When you cast this spell, you touch a non-magical object, such as a door, a chest, or a trap, and imbue it with magical potential. For the duration of the spell, you possess a detailed blueprint of the object in your mind, allowing you to understand its construction, design, and functionality. This spell identifies what material(s) the object is constructed from, and you learn whether it has any damage resistances, weaknesses or immunities.
While the spell is active, you can spend 10 minutes examining the object to gain a deeper understanding of its workings. This allows you to make an Intelligence (Investigation) check with advantage to identify any secret compartments, locks, traps, or other features of the object that are not immediately obvious.
Additionally, you can spend 10 minutes while this spell is active to alter the object to a degree within reason. For example, you could change the lock combination on a door, rendering its prior keys useless. Alternatively, you could add a secret compartment to a chest, or disable a trap. Other changes are subject to DM approval. Any changes made to the object are temporary and last for the duration of the spell. The DC to pick locks or identify hidden compartments that have been produced with this spell is equal to your spell save DC. This spell cannot change the material an object is made of, or greatly improve its value. Any changes that are made are reverted when the spell ends. Objects placed within secret compartments created with this spell appear outside of the object within 5ft.
These temporary modifications are magical in nature.
At higher levels: When this spell is cast at 4th level, the duration increases to 24 hours. When cast at 6th level, any hidden compartments, traps or secrets are made obvious to you in the blueprint immediately upon casting, and you can easily infer how to open or dismantle them if possible. When cast at 8th level, any changes made to the object with this spell become permanent: when the spell ends, the changes remain indefinitely and cease to be magical.
