Overview & Creation
A Stormcaster is a unique type of spellcaster that has no spell slots. Instead they focus on casting cantrips or other small spells and building up to combo into one massive, impacting spell.
Class Features
Spellcasting Ability
Wisdom is the key ability for a stormcaster, with the innate need to be able to know a few steps ahead what you'll be casting. You will use your Wisdom whenever a spell refers to your spellcasting ability. Additionally, you'll use your Wisdom modifier when setting the saving throw DC for your spells, stormcaster features, powers or spell attack rolls.
- Spell and feature save DC = 8 + your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
- Spell attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Wisdom modifier
Stormcasting
Stormcasting uses synergies between casting spells quickly to bolster a spells effect. In the same way a static charge can be felt after a lightning strikes nearby, residual magic lingers after spellcasting. Stormcasters have learned to harness this effect to boost the magic used in consecutive spellcastings to great effect.
Unlike most types of casters, stormcasters do not have spell slots. Instead casters build up levels of a storm with each cantrip cast, the storm level grows up to the caster's max. Cantrips gain additional damage based on the current storm level the caster has built, one additional damage die per level. The storm level also allows stormcasters to cast a spell they know at or less than the current spell level. For example, a first level stormcaster with a storm level of 1 who is casting firebolt for the 4th time consecutively will only take into account the previous spell cast and receive 1 additional damage die. A stormcaster could cast firebolt 3 times to reach a storm level of 3 and then cast a 3rd level fireball for example. Spells that can be cast at higher levels can be done so by a stormcaster increasing their storm level. However once a non-cantrip spell is cast, all the residual magic is used and the storm must be rebuilt. Additionally storms will dissipate if the stormcaster misses a round in casting a spell or if the stormcaster casts a spell of a different damage type than their current storm.
Stormcasters can cast other cantrips, and ritual spells if learned or provided a spell scroll or spellbook, however these spells will not count towards building storm levels. Memorizing cantrips or ritual spells requires 2 hours and 50gp per spell level and requires that your storm level be equal or higher to the spell's level.
Weathering The Storm
Starting at 2nd level, as long as your storm level is 1 or higher you gain resistance to the element(s) within your storm.
Storm Dance
Starting at 5th level, when you use your action to cast a cantrip, you may immediately cast the same cantrip again as a bonus action. This does raise your current combo.
Gathering Storm
Starting at 9th level, when another caster within 10 feet of you casts a cantrip, you can use the remnants of their cantrip to boost your own storm level as long as it's a complimenting damage type.
Lingering Storm
Beginning at 20th level, the storms you build do not immediately dissipate upon casting another damage type cantrip or by not casting a cantrip of the same damage type. Instead the storm reduced by a single level for each round it isn't being continuously built.
