Interlude 2: San's Scars

San clutched Stormbringer tightly. The figure in front of him was doubled over, tar-black liquid spewing from his mouth. It was coming. The wendigo was coming. San just had to keep channeling a little longer.

With a final retch, it came out. A long, serpentine figure of pure darkness with eyes that smoldered like hot coals emerged from the figure's mouth. Immediately it screeched and gave chase. San had to be quick on his feet to dodge as it rushed at him with blinding speed. It struck the wall behind him, cracking it. Undeterred, it whipped itself around, sprouting claws upon claws to rend the troublesome tengu to shreds. San charged up Stormbringer again, but he was instantly surrounded by a flurry of whirling blades. He felt one tear through his cheek and another slicing through his ear, but even so he charged up the staff and struck back at the wendigo, blasting the claws to pieces with bright green lightning.

Mallow, the Water Champion, charged the wendigo from behind him, letting loose a flurry of kicks. The wendigo roared in frustration and tried to swipe at her. She sang a three-note melody, causing it to reel back in pain. Seeing his chance, San struck the wendigo again, this time with a torrent of rain so fierce it melted the evil shapeshifter into a puddle.

The two saw their chance. "Back to the Flipside with you and your hate!" Stormbringer and the Seastone lit up simultaneously, green and blue respectively. "You have no place in this Land of Dreams!" Their glow turned to a bright white. "We belong to Altairus, Altairus is ours!" The glow began to pulse violently, a rainbow aura forming around it. "Now, begone!" The light shot out towards the wendigo. It shrieked in rage and agony as the bright light ripped it apart piece by piece. It was thrown back into the rift from whence it came, which sealed shut on impact.

"San! Look! Your cheek! It's bleeding!"

San snapped out of his thoughts. The faery he had rescued from the wendigoes was looking at him in horror.

That's when he saw it. The blood. A massive slice had been carved from his cheek. His ear didn't fare much better. He couldn't see much, but he could tell there were a couple chunks missing.

Only then did it start to hurt.
