Cassandra
The ‘Cave’ departed the Golden Reef System. Fifty two members short of what they arrived with. By any measure that was an acceptable, and successful contract. Fifty two on a starship of more than fifty four thousand was a small thing. Still, those loses were felt, even if none of them had belonged to her retinue Cassandra thought.
Cassandra knew it could have been much worse. That was one less person than a full crew of one of the frigates that rested in the hanger bays of the ‘Cave’. A Platoon of troops in total, and if the rebels had known the 10th had been coming they might have been able to put up stiffer resistance. Might have been able to shoot down drop-pods, drop ships, shuttles, starfighters, or any other number of crafts that were used to control the world.
Cassandra didn’t know any of the dead, she didn’t know most of the members of the legion which she called brothers, and sisters, but they were her brothers and sisters. Guards of the 10th, bonded by blood, and sweat, and a thousand years of tradition. She, like many others might have never heard of Golden Reef, or more important, Fortsogtuna, but it wouldn’t be forgotten. The dead would forever be remembered in the annals of the 10th, and the battle, no matter how small would be added to the battle record of the already massive list of the 10th.
Cassandra let out a sigh as she thought of the travel time between Golden Reef, and the Jom System. Three weeks of jumps, two and half if everything went well. Golden Reef might have been a Bolgar shit hole, but it was a contract, and the 10th was on duty, which meant drills were kept to a minimum, but now that they were in travel mode, she knew they would be drilling hard in the training rooms, at least the the 4th Division would be, and likely the 2nd and 3rd Divisions, at least half of the Regiments, those not aiding in the normal day to day function of the massive starship.
Cassandra heard the chime of the bell which rang through the ‘Cave’ to let everyone know of an incoming jump, and she made her way to a chair, and strapped in. The ship dogs might prefer to remain unstrapped during a jump, but not Cassandra, she had never found her space legs, and the sickness that came with each jump was almost enough to make her wish to remain on Golden Reef. Almost.
“Jump,” Cassandra heard over the comm system, and a moment later felt the sickness, and almost puked, but managed to hold it in as Echo told her to breath in her ear. Only two hundred, and something odd jumps to go.
